Along with the obituary is a picture of a man and a woman cheek-to-cheek. The picture is taken on a boat, water and horizon in the background. The woman has a round face and sparkling eyes. Her shabby gray hair is up in a messy ponytail. The man has white hair and a droopy walrus mustache. He’s wearing a Hawaiian shirt.

Nick traces Joe to the registration of a small yacht and dock rental in Dana Point. But he’d like to link him with Marco. He searches for memories with images of Marco and the man from the obit photo. Bingo! He’s found him!

The first memory he finds is a good one. It’s the memory of a high school buddy of Marco’s. A kid named Derek, but everyone calls him Turtle.

The three are in the ocean on a clear June morning, waiting for a wave. Marco catches one. Nick grudgingly admits that he’s a decent surfer. Marco kicks out when Turtle sees something moving towards Joe. Turtle hollers, “Shark!” Joe starts paddling away slowly. The shark fin follows him. Turtle’s freaking out. “Shark! Shark!” Marco returns. He’s paddling furiously straight toward the fin. The shark head pops out of the water, mouth open with all his terrible teeth.
