Black’s avoided us for two days straight. As soon as his knot went down after his second round with Elena, he left the basement. I haven’t seen him since.

Of course, the alphahole didn’t leave me alone with her. He sent down his butler to separate us like children.

That’s literally what the dude said. “Apparently, my job description now includes timeout supervision. If you make this bad for me, I will put live cockroaches in your food. I did it to Alpha Maddox when he continued to throw his used towels on the bathroom floor. So please don’t take it personally, but do take it seriously. He did not enjoy the wiggle and crunch combination. I suspect you won’t either.” Matthew had crossed his arms behind his back and narrowed his eyes at us. I had no idea how old the guy was, he could have been anywhere from fifty to eighty, but his “try me” stare was stone cold.

Then he’d left Elena in the basement, telling her to shower.

I’d followed the gray-haired man up the stairs all the way back to the attic. He’d grumbled several times about having to cancel an appointment with Matilda the flexible wonder. I’d wanted to ask, but decided keeping my mouth shut was better until I knew exactly what I was in for.

Turns out, it was hell.

I’ve been forced to sleep in Elena’s nest, looking every damned night at all the shit Black can give her that I can’t. Wealth, protection, fancy lingerie. I found some lacy sets in a dresser up here and I’ve definitely come in a few pairs of panties imagining my mate, hoping one day Black will force her to wear them and she’ll smell me, even if I’m gone. That minor rebellion has kept me sane through the past few nights, when I’ve spent hours staring at the door, expecting him to burst through and finally give me what’s coming.

Death.

His wolf has clearly claimed Elena despite the fact that she marked me. What other outcome could there be but death? Alpha assholes can’t deal with the slightest challenge. Each night I trace those marks on my neck, my fingers dragging over the soft, fresh scars. I’m still amazed by them. But I also think that they mean I’m not just marked for Elena. I’m marked for death.

Despite the deal he made with her, I’m certain Black wants to wreck me.

The only way to erase these marks is to wipe me out completely.

Maybe he wants to break my mind first.

I don’t know.

Whatever his “master” plan is, I can’t figure it out because Black’s become a ghost.

I don’t get it.

It would be easy for him. Even if I wanted to fight him, my wolf won’t. And the thing is, I don’t really want to fight him. I look around and I’m sick to my stomach knowing Black can give Elena a life a million times better than I could. I feel like an idiot for ever thinking I’d play the hero and help her get away.
