So there is plenty of useful work for a sociology of science neither uncritically deferential to the natural sciences nor uncritically cynical about them, and which, rather than competing for control of the territory, cooperates with epistemology to understand the scientific enterprise. And since evidence-sharing, cooperation, and competition all require communication, there is epistemologically useful work, also, for rhetoric of science—for reasonable rhetoric of science, that is; but here too the path will need to be cleared of various metaphysical and epistemological extravagances. This time, however, as we explore the fascinating landscape of the intricate relations between science and literature, the view promises to be terrific.
