As they all piled in, Rosario came running out the door handing them each a brown bag. “Here, I hear stories of military food. You need something better for your stomachs. And pequenita, please you all move these toys from the driveway. I must go to the store. You all eat more than I think.” Jill laughed and had the guys move their Jeeps so that Rosario could get her little convertible Miata out of the garage. They each thanked Rosario for the lunch by giving her a hug and kiss. Rosario stood in the driveway and watched Jill and her team leave the property. “Dear God, do please watch over them today. They are special boys and girls. I am glad they are here.”
Brad opened his brown lunch bag and smelled its contents. “Oh man Stryker. I can’t promise this lunch is gonna last. Wish my momma’s brown bag lunch smelled like this.” Jill laughed. “What did she pack?”
Greg spoke up. “Don’t much matter when it smells like this. But let’s take a look. Hmmm…looks like a pork sandwich, tamale, a bag of chips, pasatillo and what’s this?” He reached beneath all the food and found two slightly odd items: a dollar bill and a note.
“What is it Greg?”
Greg laughed as he pulled the items out. “Well I don’t know bout you guys but I got a dollar and a note.”
Jill laughed. “The dollar Beaver is for your drink. Rosario didn’t want your sandwich to get smashed. And the note, well something tells me we each have something different written on it.”
Brad quickly started searching through his lunch bag as well. “Man Stryker, why can’t we just stay down here? Or can we take Rosario with us to Norfolk?”
Jill laughed and looked into her rear view mirror and watched Brad and Greg peeking into the other’s bag making sure they were the same….just like elementary kids. “Boys, I promise the only difference will be the note. And no, we cannot steal Rosario away from my mom and Michelle. But enjoy it while we are here. But make sure you help her out. I don’t want her picking up after you guys.” Jill did not get a response but knew her words had gotten through to them. She glanced over at Tally sitting next to her in the front seat. “You okay Tally? You have been pretty quiet.”
