1Golwalkar tries to differentiate between varna (class) and jati (caste) by saying that varna is good and jati is bad. But he ignores the fact that varna is the mother of caste.
2Malik Kafur was a general in Alauddin Khiljiâs army who led the Deccan conquests of the Sultan. He was a Hindu slave, a eunuch, who had been captured in Gujarat and brought up as a Muslim under Khiljiâs rule. After Alauddinâs death he imprisoned the Sultanâs son Qutubuddin Mubarak Khan Shah and appointed Mubarak Shahâs younger half-brother Shihabuddin Omar Khan as the Sultan. He acted as his regent for a few months in 1316 CE before he was murdered. Following his death, Mubarak Shah took over the throne by ousting Shihabuddin. Mubarak Shah was later murdered by his general, Nasiruddin Khusro Khan, who briefly ruled as the Sultan of Delhi in 1320 CE. Like Kafur, he too was captured as a young boy and brought to Delhi as a slave (with his brother). Khusro Khan was a convert too, and some legends say that he was an âUntouchableâ before the conversion. He was captured and killed by Ghiyasuddin Tughluq.

4A rakhi is a thread, or band, tied by sisters on the wrists of their brothers on the occasion of the Raksha Bandhan festival. The thread symbolizes a brotherâs responsibility in the protection and care of his sisterâwhich she acknowledges through the ritual tying of the rakhi.
