CHAPTER SIXTEEN

September 16

Cara stood in front of the courtroom and faced the jury composed of three women and nine men. She glanced over her shoulder and saw Romaine watching her closely.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the court today will be the first day of many that will define the law. This day and the days following will determine whether the law is truly blind or will you, as the people will see the truth for what it is. The defense will have you believe that Anthony Rosottii Jr. was not responsible for the murder of his accountant, James Williams.” She turned toward ‘Lil Tony’ who sat tranquil behind the defense table.

“As you will discover over the days that follow, James was a smart man. He was a man that handled the moneys from the illegal ‘businesses’ of the Rosottii family. Albeit he began to become greedy during his term, but did that warrant a reason for the defendant to kill in cold blood?” She turned towards Romaine taking a deep breath to calm her rattled nerves.

“No, it didn’t give Mr. Rosottii Jr. a reason to kill. No one has the right to kill in cold blood. The facts of this case are indisputable. You will hear testimony from federal agents, Chicago policeman and eye witnesses that will corroborate the evidence that show that ‘Lil Tony’, as he is known in the crime world, planned, plotted and executed an almost perfect murder.” She walked to the prosecution table and looked directly at Judge Matthews before taking her seat beside Romaine.

Cara felt ‘Lil Tony’s’ eyes on her. She sat straight backed in her chair knowing that he was watching her. Feeling his eyes tear into her soul, remembering whom she really was. What her name was. Samantha, her mind cried. My name is Samantha McKarthy, she sobbed silently.

“The defense will call its first witness.” Judge Matthews said in a quiet tone as she watched Cara from where she sat.

Cara glanced over to see, Theresa Powell, defense counselor stand. “Defense calls Vincenzo Macavelli.” Cara turned as he walked through the courtroom doors.

Remembering his policeman like swagger from when she was a young girl, Cara tried to hide that she was afraid of him. She had always been afraid of him. He would stand in the background of all her father’s meetings with Rosottii. He made her nervous.

“The witness has been sworn in.” the bailiff spoke quietly bringing Cara out of the past hell that had captured her from the moment that Vincenzo Macavelli walked pass her and onto the witness stand.

“Mr. Macavelli, would you please tell the court what your association is with the defendant.” Theresa began the case with foundation questions.

Theresa wasn’t the best defense attorney, but she was very smart, Cara thought. Smart enough to set the scene for Cara and her cross-examination.

“I’m Mr. Rosottii’s personal body guard.” Vincenzo said with a heavy Italian accent.

“Mr. Macavelli, were you present on the night that Mr. Rosottii and Mr. Williams had their monthly meeting?” Theresa stood and walked towards Vincenzo.
