Terri strolled off toward the terrace, hoping to find the strength and the words she would need to confront Clint. It would be another week before she would return to New York. A whole week to let the damage settle in.

She shut her eyes. Lisa was right. Clint did deserve to know the truth. Even if they didn’t pursue their relationship, she couldn’t let him continue to think so little of her.

Chapter 17

Everything was happening too fast. Melissa felt as if she were sinking into a pit of quicksand, and Mark was the anchor that weighted her body downward. He seemed to have cast some kind of bizarre spell over her, and she didn’t have the willpower to break free. He’d convinced her, during their nights of unleashed passion, that what they were doing was justified—that Terri deserved to be brought down a notch for what she’d done to Mark over the past year. Most of all because she’d taken Clint away from her. And when Mark made her body sing with each stroke of his, she’d agreed over and again.

Melissa sprang up from her seat and began pacing her carpeted office, her svelte silhouette cutting a stunning figure against the plate-glass background.

Absently she chewed on a red-lacquered nail, contemplating what she should do, when the phone rang, halting her in midstep.

She took a long breath, then picked up the receiver.

“Melissa Taylor.”

“Mel, it’s me, Mark.”

Automatically her pulse began to escalate, and she felt suddenly breathless. “Mark,” she answered, forcing a lightness into her voice, “where are you?”

“At my apartment. Did you get a chance to check the files?”

She swallowed while her mind ran through a million reasons why she shouldn’t give Mark the information.

“Yes, I did.” She looked down at the stack of files on her desk. “I—I have them here.”

“Great.” He checked his watch. “I’ll pick them up on my way out to the airport. See you in a few.”

“Mark. Wait.”

“What is it, Mel? I’m really pressed for time.”

She ignored the annoyance in his voice and let the words pour out. “I don’t know if I can go through with this.”

“What do you mean, ‘you don’t know’? You’d better know! This is no time for you to start acting shaky. This is just the beginning.” His voice grew hard. “I expect you to hold up your end. I don’t like screwups.” He slammed down the phone before she could respond.

Melissa shut her eyes as Mark’s words tugged on the anchor.
