Chapter 12

Paige

When the train finally stopped in Tria, I was half-expecting to find Jax waiting for us at the station, but he wasn’t there.

We were fine.

We were free.

Ryssi guided me out of the station and to an outside area filled with trees, plants, and flowers.

“What is this place?” I asked, looking around. There were no roads. There were no lots filled with hovercars or anything like that.

“It’s where we’ll grab a hovercab,” he said.

“Uh,” I gestured wildly. “In case you didn’t notice, there’s nothing here.”

Ryssi just smiled.

Within seconds, a hovercar lowered itself directly in front of us, hovering about two feet off of the ground. That was when I looked up sharply to the sky.

“So that’s where all the traffic is.”

“Yes.”

“It’s so quiet,” I murmured.

On Gideon, everything felt loud and rushed. Not here. Not on Malum. While we had hovercars, too, everything seemed much more Earth-like than things were on Malum. Now, as I looked up at the sky, I could see different kinds of vehicles moving swiftly through the air.

Everyone seemed like they knew where they were going, like they knew what they were doing.

It was almost magical, really.

“Isn’t your planet quiet?”

“No,” I whispered.

No, it wasn’t quiet.

Not like this.

The longer I stayed on Malum, the more I liked it, and the more I felt bad about growing up believing that it was this huge, terrible place. What the hell had been wrong with me? Why had I gotten caught up in this idea that it was a bad place?

Oh yeah.

My parents.

They, along with every other adult on the damn planet, had taught us younger people that Malum was a place to be feared.

The longer I stayed here, the more I began to feel that perhaps my own planet was the one to be feared.

“In or out?” The holocab driver yelled at us, but he still didn’t come across as grumpy or rude. He just seemed like he was a busy sort of man.

“In,” Ryssi said.

The cab door was open. It lifted straight up and out, much like a ship, and we climbed up and in. The cab driver had dark purple skin, like Ryssi did, but he had horns on his head, and I thought I saw a tail wrapped around him, too. I tried not to look too closely because I didn’t want to be rude.

I expected the man to ask Ryssi where he wanted to go, but he didn’t. Instead, a screen was lowered in front of Ryssi and me, and it displayed a map of the city.

“What’s this?”

“It’s a map,” Ryssi explained, slowing his words. “Surely, you have maps on Gideon.”

“I mean, how does it work?”

“He’ll select where he wants to go,” the cab driver offered helpfully.

“Oh, so he can select the route and everything?”

“Yes.”

“Very interesting,” I murmured.

Ryssi selected a location. Then he pulled out a small metallic coin and stuck it in the side of the screen. Numbers appeared on the screen, and then Ryssi pulled the coin back and put it in his pocket.

“And that was you paying?”

“Yes.
