Chapter Twenty-Eight
As I watch the other patients being escorted out, I fight the urge to go with them. My fight-or-flight response is in overdrive, and my first instinct is to make it stop by any means possible.
I force myself to breathe, shallow movements, and to take everything in. The panic of those around me is hard to ignore. Their scared faces and high-pitched screams trigger me. I donât blame them at all. I blame my mother for always yelling at me and my brother. She caused anxiety to riddle my skin and burrow into my mind.
Doctor Sidney follows the remaining death keepers out with Kol at her heels. They all walk through the door without a backwards glance except him. He stands for a moment, looking at me with his hands on hips. A distant stare crosses his face, only to disappear as quickly as it came.
âBe mindful of your surroundings. Even the brave lose sometimes. I donât want that to happen to you.â The door closes after him, leaving me and Alex alone.
âWhat was that about?â Alex asks, glancing at me in confusion.
I shrug. âHeâs been off since we got back from grabbing your bag.â I turn to look for the tunnel. âNow that itâs empty, this place gives me the creeps.â
Alex walks ahead, searching. âDid your grandpa say where he found the tunnel?â
âNo. Just said he located it.â
I go to the opposite side of the room. âHe was over here the last I saw him.â Stepping over cracked flooring, my feet cause dust to circle the air. White particles float upward toward my face and land in my hair. My nose tickles, and I fight back the urge the sneeze.
The supply room catches my attention. If I built a secret tunnel in and out of the city, it would make sense for me to do it in a room that holds medical items and useful supplies. My suspicions hold true as I eye something dark on the floor.
âAlex! Get over here!â I call. I lean down to get a better look. A manhole cover lays off to the side, revealing a sewer pipe.
Alex comes running and joins me for a closer view. âLooks promising. I mean, it makes sense, right?â
âDid you find anything?â
âNothing that would resemble a tunnel, no,â Alex answers. âUgh, it stinks.â He backs away from the darkness. âWhen your grandpa mentioned a tunnel, I figured one with dirt, spiders, and creepy-crawlies. Not one with snakes and human waste.â
âMaybe the people who built the tunnel were not officials. Maybe they were citizens trying to escape, and this was the only solution,â I suggest with a shrug.
Alex pinches his nose closed. âI suppose.â
âThe only people allowed out of the city are government workers and those that work in transportation of goods,â I remind him.
âYes.â Alex opens my pack that heâs still carrying. âDavis told me how strict they are with all the people that leave the city. His momâs truck would get searched every single time she left and came back.
