The drag queens were getting very curious glances from the members of the Binding Ties Book Society that occupied the upper reading level. It was like someone had yanked life-sized characters from several books and brought them into existence. As the book club members discussed their latest read, one or more had their eyes fixated on the drag queens, like they were trying to figure out if they were male or female.
âDo you see them staring at us?â Vanessa asked.
âI wonder what theyâre thinking,â Melbourne Toast said.
âI know what Iâm thinking,â Lady Huckleberry said. âIâm thinking Iâve finally crossed paths with the cast of Cocoon.â
Gigi Topp sneered. âYouâre not too far from being those people yourself. Hell, your boobs already sag to your waistline.â
âYouâre one to talk, Grandma Moses. You were around before book clubs were invented. Hell, you were around before there were books.â
Zachary sighed. âIf you bitches are finished slopping sugar on each other, Iâd like to get back to talking about the protesters who plan to be at tonightâs show.â
Morgan DâMare tossed her black feather boa over her shoulder. âI say bring it on. Any publicity is good publicity.â
âWhoever came up with that saying never had a dead drag queen land in their trash dumpster,â Lady Huckleberry said.
âZachary, what are you suggesting we do?â Gigi asked.
âJust stick together when you can. Try to avoid any groups or mobs. Itâs likely one person might be responsible for killing Emerald, but frightened townspeople could be just as dangerous.â Zachary took a sip of tea. âWeâve already had twenty people with tickets for tonightâs show ask for refunds, and there may be more people pulling out of the other shows.â
Vanessa huffed. âRemember the old days when a dead gay man or drag queen didnât attract much attention? I guess thatâs the price of equality.â
Gigi rolled her eyes. âZachary, have the authorities figured out who murdered Emerald? I know that detective was asking us questions earlier, but surely they donât suspect us. Weâre performersâdancers, comedians, lip sync artists. We donât kill people.â
âYouâre also an enigma, Gigi, a curiosity even. Drag queens donât regularly walk down the streets in Gresham. Kyle and Russell drag it up, but only for special occasions like parades and festivals. Besides being entertaining, you five are also educating that there are a variety of people in the world with different lifestyles.â
âStill, even though weâre unknown, that doesnât mean weâre bad.â
âGet real, Gigi,â Morgan said. âThatâs small-town America. If you donât fit in the mold of what society thinks you should be, then they think youâre a threat to all that is good and pure.â
âItâs not that way so much anymore, my dear,â Vanessa said. âLook at what just happened the other day with the federal courts overturning Wisconsinâs ban on gay marriage. Attitudes are changing, even in small towns like this.â
âIf attitudes are changing, why are there going to be protesters at tonightâs show? Why are people asking for their money back? You can wrap it up
