Letter 12
What Are We Going
to Do About It?
Initially my letters to you were an exercise to explore my own thinking. I was not yet committed to making public my feelings about our friendship and my perspective. There were already so many sources commenting on race. I wasnât confident I had meaningful insights to offer nor a platform from which to share them. I also questioned if my input would make any difference.
Yet, I could not stop seeing the multiple systems of injustice, oppression, and lack of equity. As I continued to write these letters to you, my reflections clearly heightened my sensitivity. But in February 2020, via a cell phone video, I watched Ahmaud Arbery being pursued by two armed men in a white pickup truck.1 The imagery took me back to visions of White vigilante justice I had only seen portrayed in the movies circa the early 1900s. This was real. It was happening in 2020. Two White men taking the law into their own hands. The images made me ill. Honestly, it frightened me that acts like this were still possible.
