Hunny returned to the kitchen, wiped her brow with her sleeve and brushed a wisp of hair out of her face. How sheâd managed to end up helping with the food, she didnât know, but she was glad for it. It gave her something to do other than imagine a future that could never be.
âAre the biscuits all gone?â Belle asked, her hands on her hips as she surveyed the kitchen. âI thought I had another pan of them to take out.â
Hunny studied what food remained. There were several more racks of ribs to be barbecued, a bowl of sauce to go with them, a few bowls of vegetables and a large one of potatoes. âI think Michael took the last batch out.â
âIâm just too tired to handle another pan.â She looked at Hunny. âYou donât think weâll need them, do you?â
âI donât think so, Mrs. Cooke. I believe the guests are more interested in dessert at this point.â
âTrue, but at least half the men out there will get their second wind and want more. They always do. By the way, call me Belle.â
She nodded. âAnd you can call me Hunny.â She smiled. âMichael said by the end of the barbecue everyone would be calling us by our first names.â A tingle went up her spine at the sound of his name. Good grief â perhaps she was more intrigued by him than she first thought.
âMichael Comfort?â Belle clarified. âWell, heâd be right. You might as well get used to it.â She studied Hunny a moment. âI see the two of you are already on a first-name basis.â
âMr. Comfort and me? Well,â she hedged. âI suppose.â
âYou suppose?â
Hunny shrugged and offered nothing more. She didnât want the woman to think she and Michael had an eye for each other. He didnât, of course, but she was definitely fighting to keep her eyes off him â and was losing the battle.
Sadie entered the kitchen through the back door. âMy goodness, what a hungry bunch of people this year. Are there any more biscuits?â
Belle pinched the bridge of her nose. âI knew Iâd have to make another batch. I wonder where Aunt Irene is?â
Sadie laughed. âI donât think you made a single panful. She did them all.â
Belle grinned sheepishly. âI know. But her biscuits are so much better than mine.â
Hunny listened with fascination to their banter. It was nothing important, but it was peaceful, their voices void of angst or nerves. There was no Aunt Henrietta hovering, criticizing, belittling and making their lives miserable.
She headed for the back door, Georgie and Rosie suddenly on her mind. Were they still with Darcy and Zachary?
âWhere are you going?â Sadie asked as she reached for a pan. âYou wouldnât happen to know how to whip up biscuits, would you?â She gave Belle a pointed look. Belle rolled her eyes in response.
âIâm not very good at it. Rosieâs the cook in our family, and a good one too.â
Belleâs eyes lit up. âIs she?â
Sadie put her hand on her hip.
