In the drawing room a short time later, Eleanor sat as Cameron poured her a sherry. He walked back across the room, handing it to her as he sat beside her.

“I want to know who’s backing the count, who’s financing this new business. Did you see him stare right at me as he was describing this new…what is he calling it, The King of Hearts? Yes, he’ll have some men’s hearts. Literally, I believe.”

“Yes, I did, and it made me uncomfortable. Part of the reason I was more than ready for us to leave,” Cameron said.

“There is nothing we can do about it tonight. Put someone on going to Scotland once we know for sure where this property is, and if my father still owns it. Between that and trying to find out about what the count is up to, your people will be quite busy.” She sipped from the glass and tilted her head, watching his face with renewed interest.

“You know what I would like very much for you to do for me?”

“What’s that, sweetheart?”

“Play for me. I haven’t heard you play in quite a while.”

“That’s because I don’t play like I used to.”

Cameron had been taught at an early age to play pianoforte by his mother and then teachers. His father had thought that it wasn’t something a young man who would become a duke should be doing. At least not outside the home. Eleanor had heard him play many times. Sometimes, they would play together.

“I know it helps to calm you.”

“Not like you do, El.”

“Still, I would like for you to play for me.”

“Another time, perhaps. Soon,” Cam replied.

“Very well.”

“I am quite hungry. I think I should like to raid the kitchens.”

“Would you like to ask Cook to fix us something?”

“No.”

“I’ll go see what I can find. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

“Thank you, love.”

Eleanor finished her sherry, then set the glass down on a table. She leaned over and kissed Cameron, laying her one hand on his cheek. His skin felt smooth, and she could still smell the faint scent of his shaving soap and cologne. “Don’t go anywhere,” she whispered.
