FORTY-FIVE

THE CABIN WAS DARK. Mina lay on the narrow bed provided by her new companions and stared up at the ceiling.

Sleep was impossible.

Beyond the cabin’s connecting door, in the adjacent cabin, she could hear a murmur of indistinct conversation. Were the vampires talking about her or their plan to resurrect the ancient creature that went by the name of Amenmosep? To do that, they would need the amulet currently in the possession of the Man in the Black Suit. She had glimpsed it on a chain around his neck and recognized it right away. His life would now be in grave danger.

Not that Mina cared so much about that as she did about the carnage that would be caused by a ravenous vampire looking to rejuvenate itself after being imprisoned inside a tomb for thousands of years. Abraham Turner had cut a swath of destruction through twenty-first-century London after being restrained for only a fraction of that time. That Amenmosep had enough life force to sustain himself through such a long slumber without finally succumbing to death spoke of the incredible amount of victims who must have died at his hands. After all, these creatures were not immortal. They merely extended their lives by stealing the remaining years of those they slayed.

Her most immediate concern, however, was escaping the ship before it embarked on the final leg of its journey to New York. Hours from now, the Titanic would drop anchor in Queenstown and provide her with that opportunity. Afterward, when she was safe, Mina would send word to London, and Thomas Finch, apprising him of the situation. If she were lucky, the pair of vampires who had rescued her from her captors, as well as Amenmosep, would be lost with the ship, but she could not take that chance. It would be bad enough if the vampires reached New York. It would be worse if the ancient creature in the hold were to do so. It was her job, and that of The Order of St. George, to prevent such a scenario.

But first, she must come up with a means of escape because she doubted the vampires would allow her to simply saunter out of the door and not come back. They had not physically restrained her, as The Man in the Black Suit had—she was not shackled to the bed—but she was hardly free. The vampires had made it clear they did not trust her, and although they had appeared to accept her explanation of how she became one of them and ended up on the ship, she had no proof to back up her claim—a story that was only partly true. For all they knew, she had actively taken part in the demise of Abraham Turner, which was closer to the reality of it. They must also wonder if Mina had killed Turner so she could steal his powers.

She rolled over in the bed and glanced up at the porthole above her head. All she saw was a patch of dark and starless sky.
