Chapter 14
âI want to go over my notes regarding motives and alibis,â Alex said as he pulled into his driveway. âMaybe tonight when I pick Zoie up we can discuss our theories so far?â
âSounds good. Weâll probably finish around nine. Why donât you pick Zoie up from my house? Iâll take her back there and feed her since sheâll probably be starving.â I slid my glance his way. âIâll have plenty if you want to graze too.â
He grinned. âThanks.â Heâd barely put the Blazer in park before his front door flew open and Zoie sprinted out to the car. By the time she closed the vehicle door and buckled her seatbelt, three seconds hadnât even passed.
âI guess I didnât need to go inside and get anything,â Alex said dryly.
âOh, Dad!â She rolled her eyes. âIâm just excited. Letâs go!â
Twenty-five minutes later, Alex dropped us off at GiGiâs cottage, reminded Zoie to be on her best behavior, then gave us a wave as he turned around in GiGiâs driveway and headed back toward town.
GiGi opened the front door and motioned us inside. The cottage was small, no bigger than eight hundred square feet. The front door opened into the living room, with the kitchen through the archway left of the living room. Standing at the front door, you could also see directly into the only bathroom the cottage had. To the left of the bathroom was GiGiâs room, and to the right were two more tiny bedrooms that belonged to my mom and aunt when they lived in the house.
GiGi was dressed in her favorite black wool dress she wore for special occasions. Her frizzy gray hair peeked out beneath a black and purple witch hat. I tried not to smile at how overboard sheâd gone. She obviously wanted this to be a special night for Zoie.
âShayla,â GiGi said, âI put Zoieâs dress in your momâs old room. I found two more extras for you to choose from that I put in the other bedroom.â
I frowned. âUm, I donât think Iâll fit into one of those old dresses, GiGi. Iâm not the same size I was in high school.â
GiGi looked me up and down. âYou have gotten boobs since then, I guess.â
I heard Zoie snicker.
âNot only have my boobs grown,â I said, âbut so have my hips and everything else.â
âItâll be fine.â Gigi shooed us away. âGo on now. Iâve got the ritual tea brewing, and once youâre dressed we can get started with the sage.â
Knowing better than to argue, I led Zoie to the back of the living room and stepped over the threshold where the bathroom and bedrooms were crammed together. Opening Momâs bedroom door, I motioned for Zoie to go inside. I followed behind and shut the door.
âOh my gosh!â she gasped. âItâs gorgeous!â She held the royal blue, crushed velvet dress up to her body and twirled. The long sleeves floated out from the dress as she spun. âI get to wear this?â
âYou do. This dress was
