Chapter Twenty-Two
âIcanât believe he told me to get lost so he could talk to you alone.â Jax clicked the locks on the truck as they approached it.
Kenna had the same reaction when Preston said that to them almost as soon as they entered his hospital room. However, considering she hadnât let it happen, there wasnât much for Jax to grumble about. âJust as long as he does what he said and hires a company that will protect him even if itâs just in case, Iâm not going to worry about the rest of it.â
Jaxâs phone started to ring, cutting off whatever he had been about to say. âItâs my sister. I sent her a text about the Willowbrooke Resort and the time we spent there when we were kids.â
Kenna nodded, wondering if she should offer to take a wander and maybe make a call of her own while he spoke to his sister. She was curious enough about Lainey to want to listen in and definitely meet the woman someday, but the fact his family came in a package deal that involved his parents made Kenna hesitate.
Not that she thought there was something wrong with them. More that it was wrong with her. She had no idea how to navigate family life. Once they broke the seal on making it official with his extended family, sheâd be all inâno going back. Not just the two of them, but also holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas with his relatives.
Things she had little experience with, and a whole lot of anxiety. Kenna wasnât sure she wanted to think about the fact it was easier for her to go up against a deadly serial killer than it was to bite the bullet and meet Jaxâs mother. Probably sheâd simply left it too long, built it up as too big now and shouldâve done it months ago.
Jax shifted the phone away from his mouth. âAre you getting in, Kenna?â
She held the door open and climbed into the passenger seat.
âThatâs what I thought,â Jax said. He started the car and the call connected to the car Bluetooth, Laineyâs response coming through the speakers now.
âYou donât remember anything about that trip?â
Jax pulled out, driving away from the medical center. Kenna didnât know where they were going, and maybe he didnât even have a plan of what they should do next. She decided to be content spending time with him and having not much purpose in mindâexcept for the fact that there was a case to work.
âIsnât that where we played in the gravel?â Jax said. âI remember a lake, and the waiter gave us Jell-O.â
Lainey was quiet for a few moments. Then she said, âThatâs it?â
âWhat else am I supposed to remember?â
âIâve always wondered why you never said anything to me. The research Iâve done says itâs a trauma reaction, where you block out something horrific because your mind doesnât know how to process it.â
âLainey, what are you talking about?â
Kenna glanced at him. He genuinely seemed confused, making her wonder over the answer to his question.
