Chapter 37

The next morning, Sara drove to Coyne Street to have a look at the house Kimo Koukalaka mentioned. Heavy dark clouds oozed across the sky. As she drove by looking for a place to park, the boarded-up house sitting under ominous skies seemed foreboding. If she found anyone to talk to, maybe a neighbor might remember Emma.

The rush hour was over. The narrow street, only a few blocks long, had emptied of cars and people. A dark sedan was parked in a driveway a couple of doors down the block. It looked dusty, like it had been sitting a while. No one loitered on the street.

Like the rest of Mo'ili'ili, the neighborhood looked to be in a stage of remodeling and upgrading. Single story houses with pitched roofs were built in the '40s and '50s to improve the lives of the local citizenry. The vast area was called Mo'ili'ili, a Hawaiian Homeland Territory.

Now many homes had an added second story. Several small apartment buildings looked to have replaced private homes on the largest lots. Other homes remained unchanged, except for aging. Age was shown by the way they were temporarily patched and repaired. Much of the older architecture was similar. The houses had a variety of small front porches. Some were built elevated off the ground a few feet with steps up to the front porch, the steps having low squared-off side walls. Some homes built on the ground had slightly larger porches.

The locals of this working-class neighborhood held down two or more jobs trying to eke out a living in an escalating economy now dominated by foreign money. Some could afford a few toys. Boats and trailers, a commonplace sight in Hawaii, stood in a few side yards and driveways.

Sara parked a block away. Her rented black Cadillac Escalade parked on the street in front of a house with an expensive pontoon party boat on a trailer in the yard wouldn't look conspicuous. Again, Hien and his questionable friends came to mind. She had rented the Cadillac from his friend. The friend's business looked reputable, but it being a friend of Hien, Sara wondered if the Cadillac had ever been used in some suspicious activity somewhere. The thought unnerved her, but she needed to stay focused on what she was about to do.

The breeze picked up, scooting more clouds over the area. She frowned. She had left her hair hanging loose, loving the feeling of the trade winds blowing through it. If it rained, her hair would look a fright if it got wet. She left her sun hat in the car. She didn't want to accidentally forget it, leaving a tell-tale sign in the house should she get inside. Seeing the house empty, that became her intention. If Emma had lived there, she hoped to find evidence that would lead to the next step in their investigation.

Keo had told her and Huxley to watch their backs. She casually looked up and down the street. She saw no one.
