The cross never hit me.

Instead, I heard a growling noise from Noah as he used his telekinesis to push the several hundred-pound piece of stone back through the hole in the roof to land with a loud crash somewhere right outside. The wooden door flew open and he shouted, “Run!”

Carmen went first, only to be knocked to the side by a large man standing out front. She rolled with him and managed to get to her feet and start running before he had a chance to grab her again. “Cressa! Come on!” She held out her hand and I clutched it without thinking otherwise. Pulling me back onto the stone pathway, we ran toward the far entrance of the cemetery.

But we only made a few feet before the route in front of us filled with people dressed in all black. They weren’t the soldier uniforms the Imperium used, but they were definitely decked out in professional gear. A large tree branch flew over our heads, knocking several of the men in the middle to the sides like bowling pins. Carmen and I turned together to see Noah getting ready to sling a large chunk of concrete their way.

“Behind you!” I shouted when I saw a very large men running straight for my phoenix. Noah turned, repositioned his hands in the air, and directed the concrete to slam into the guy. It flattened him with a sickening crunch…and that’s when the people in the cemetery started to scream.

A mob of scared citizens and visitors began running toward the entrance. Some started our way, but when they saw the carnage around us, they quickly changed their minds.

“Carmen, watch out!”

A soldier or mercenary or whatever they were appeared out of nowhere and grabbed at Carmen. She ducked and swung a few punches before finally getting herself behind the soldier. Wrapping her arms across the woman’s chest, Carmen squeezed. She used her body weight to knock both of them around, Carmen doing a move that put her squarely on the back of the soldier. She pressed the soldier’s face into the ground and let out a scream a banshee would be proud of. Then, she fed. It was something I had no desire to see yet couldn’t turn away from. Carmen’s eyes glowed a bright white as she sucked the essence of the soldier into her. I couldn’t see the energy itself, but I knew that’s what was happening.

The woman on the ground tried to scream, only to have the noise cut off as she gurgled for air. It happened so fast. One minute the soldier was trying her best to stay alive and the next she was a shriveled-up piece of carcass whose life force had literally been sucked away from her.

I almost puked.

“Cressa, run!” Noah shouted from behind me and I wondered if he was warning me away from the soldiers or from Carmen. I reached into the bag and pulled out my new dagger. It was the only weapon I had, and I hoped the meteorite blade was strong enough to hold up in a fight.
