Steele was devoted to OâConnell, saying that he would readily die for him or his country. They travelled around Ireland together addressing crowds and, when there was a threat of violence, Tom Steele would calm the sometimes-fractious mob.
By the 1840s Tom Steele had become something of a figure of fun amongst the new and younger members of the repeal movement. In his adventures he had broken most of his teeth and, when he spoke, he tended to cover the listener in spittle. He was mocked for his slave-like devotion to OâConnell and was described by some of the Young Irelanders as a âsemi-lunaticâ. When OâConnell was asked once why he kept Steele on as head pacificator, he responded, âWhy, who else would want that job?â
