CHAPTER TEN

I didn’t see Nick at all the next day. I wasn’t sure if he was truly busy or if he was just avoiding me. I took a long run in the morning, stopped for some coffee at the diner, and then spent the rest of the day reading through the book that Nick had given me about Shaded Falls. After that, I did some research on the internet. From what I could tell, the book was correct about the town’s history.

I expected Nick to come home around dinnertime, ready to give me a hard time for sitting inside and reading all day. But Nick never showed. It occurred to me that I had just been sitting around all day waiting for him which was so incredibly against my nature that I worried I’d become too attached to Nick. What had seemed like a fun friendship with the guy across the hall had quickly become something more. I couldn’t have that.

The next morning, I made a point to be busy. Nick had come home sometime in the middle of the night, waking me when he knocked something over in his room. As I listened to him stumble around, I suspected he was drunk. Rather than think too much about where he had been, I forced myself to go back to sleep and woke with purpose.

I did everything I could to occupy my time. I got coffee and a muffin at the diner. Then I walked around the downtown shops and pretended to be interested in the boutique clothing.

“Nick would love that on you.”

I jumped, completely shocked to find someone standing right next to me. “Whoa. Sloan, where did you come from?”

“Sorry to sneak up on you.” She smiled sympathetically. “Did you have fun on your date with Nick?”

“Oh, yeah. Lots of fun.” I frowned. “It wasn’t exactly a date. Nick’s just a friend.”

“Sure. That’s why you’re looking at sexy lingerie right now.”

I was shocked to see that she was right. Somehow, I had ended up in the intimate section of the boutique. I also remembered what Nick had said about his claim on me and the need to make it clear that I was off limits. “Trust me, Nick doesn’t want to see me in lingerie,” I said, knowing that my delivery could be interpreted in many ways.

“You should know that all the girls at school already hate you.” Sloan reached for a skimpy outfit and studied it with a critical eye. “Nick was a senior when we were freshman and we all had giant crushes on him. He was the star of the school. So hot. Still is.”

“He was popular?” I said.

“Oh totally. He was prom king. Got offers to play baseball at a bunch of schools.” Sloan decided against the skimpy band of lace. “Something happened though and he never left town. I think we all hoped that meant we still had a chance to get him to fall in love with us, but he stopped coming to the parties.
