Chapter Six

The boat was larger below deck than the exterior and the area above indicated. Callie wasn’t surprised by the illusion. After all, this was a space traveling craft twice as large as the sailboat. Its exterior had been camouflaged by programming their technology to have it appear like an earth sea-faring craft, even the interior mimicked a sea craft. They entered into a wooden paneled area that looked like a small cozy kitchen, or galley. One side had yellow pine cabinets and what looked like a built-in microwave, she was sure they held the ship’s operational equipment as well as a nutrition dispenser. Beside this area was a booth with one end of the table built into the wall, across from this, a desk with what appeared to be a silver laptop sitting in a niche to prevent it from sliding. An aisle, wide enough to walk single file, separated the room. Callie headed straight for the laptop, which she recognized as a communications and navigation console. Just one with interstellar applications.

She sat down in the chair and turned the power on, but the screen remained black. Of course, it was coded. An arm reached from behind her shoulder and long thick fingers hovered above the surface of what should have been a keyboard. In nanoseconds, the screen changed from black to a bright white light.

Unlike an earth laptop, it wasn’t necessary to touch any actual keys. In fact there were no keys. What would be the keyboard was actually a flat smooth metallic surface, infused with technology even she didn’t understand how it worked, only that it did. The board was programmed to Jaran’s imprint, he only had to move his palm across it, and the machine read his needs.

Soon her father’s beloved face filled the monitor. “Father.” The word came out on a sob. Not until that moment did Callie realize how much she truly missed him. Raising her hand, she touched the screen, he raised his hand mirroring hers.

“Callie, daughter.” The words came out in a choke from her father, his eyes filled with water. “I see Jaran found you. Thank the gods. I wasn’t sure. I knew where the ship landed but wasn’t sure if you remained in the area. You are well?” He blinked several times, so did she. Fighting to hold back her own tears.

“Yes, yes. I’m fine. But I miss you, and…even Mother.”

That made him smile. “Oh, Callie, we miss you too, both of us.”

“I know our plan didn’t work. Have you told Mother where I am?”

“She only asked if you were safe. I told her you were and she was satisfied with that answer. But she misses you. She has not been the same since you left.”

Callie didn’t know what to make of that. This did not sound like the woman who demanded she honor the arranged marriage contract. Something of her disbelief must have shown on her face.

“It’s true, child. She loves you, and only wanted what was best. She even takes time off now for us to spend together, and calls fewer board meetings.
