Brenna Sinclair, I don’t get boys, especially this one, age 16

Dear Diary:

Boundaries are not the same as barriers. Don’t confuse the two. One will leave you empowered and open, while the other? The other leaves you lost and alone. -Brenna

I look over at the boy tugging me down the beach. He is carrying both our boards in one hand and his free hand is intertwined with mine. I chew my lower lip, confused by him and loathing myself. I turn to face him but get distracted by his jaw. I’ve always been fascinated by his profile. His chin alone could earn him millions. My mom and his always joked about it when we were little. How he was going to be a heartbreaker when he grew up. If they only knew how right they were.

Noah has always looked older than all the other kids, probably because his height and chiseled features make him look almost like an adult. I say look because once he opens his mouth, it’s obvious he’s not mature at all. Noah takes after his mom, who is a beauty queen--a genuine Miss California. That’s where he gets his tanned skin and those melancholy hazel eyes of his. Sometimes they’re gold, occasionally green, often a swirly mixture of the two. His eyes are like a mood ring. I used to call him “Hollywood.” He’d get so annoyed, which made it even more enjoyable.

When we were five, Noah wanted to play Ninja Turtles, and I wanted to play Barbies. We compromised by him letting me use a Barbie for April O’Neil. He drew the line at April marrying Leonardo, who is obviously the best turtle. He said ninja turtles are assassins and don’t get married. Jake agreed. Which was irritating because they would always gang up on me.

One day when I was racing Jake and Noah on my skateboard, we dared each other to ride down this enormous hill by our house. I slipped off my board mid-hill and tumbled down the rest of it. Tumbled sounds graceful, but I was out of control the entire way down, flopping and skidding on my way to being battered and bruised. When I came to a halt, I started to cry. Through my salty tears I took stock of my injuries. I had scraped raw the left side of my torso, removed patches of skin on my legs, reduced my elbows to hamburger, and even managed to put bloody roses on my cheeks. Seeing a tiny rock stuck in my knee is what set me off. Full on bawling like my leg and arm had fallen off. Jake raced to get our moms while Noah sat with me on the ground, my head in his lap, holding my hand the whole time. He kept pushing my hair out of my eyes and blowing on my cuts for me. He promised to let Barbie marry Leonardo--probably the only time since I’ve known him that he’s ever been that sweet.
