Profiling missing values

The focus of this chapter is to introduce more advanced methods to profile missing values. This is shown in section 10.3. Not only are the number of missing values analyzed, but this chapters looks at the inherent structure of missing values across different variables.

For each observation, a characteristic pattern is created that describes the distribution of missing values across variables. This pattern, which is described in the form of tabulations and a tile chart, offers firsthand insight into the structure of missing values. Additionally, cluster analysis and principal components are used to create more insight into frequent co-existences of missing values across variables. They also show the “closeness” and relationships between variables based on the fact that missing values occur together for these variables.
