Case Study: Urban Heat Islands
Urban heat islands (UHIs) are areas within urban environments that experience higher temperatures than their rural surroundings due to human activities. By applying spatial statistics, we can identify UHIs and understand their impact on urban climates.
Researchers in Toronto used spatial autocorrelation and hotspot analysis to map UHIs across the city. Their findings revealed that densely built areas with limited green spaces were the most affected, prompting initiatives to increase urban greenery and mitigate heat effects.
