DAY TWENTY

By the time I reached home last night, my head was throbbing and my breath was coming out ragged. But seeing Finn wagging his tail as soon as I climbed up the stairs calmed me a little. I fed him and warmed some canned soup for myself. After finishing our meals in silence, we turned in for the night.

It felt like Finn somehow understood my state of mind and was cuddling me for comfort. But despite the comfort of his warm fur, sleep was difficult to come. I slept in short spells each time, waking up with a startle. The memories from the past were haunting me. Memories that I had buried all those years ago and promised myself to never visit again.

My eyes opened with the sound of doorbell and I observed the sun peeking from behind the curtains. I was in no mood to rise and contemplated calling sick for work when the bell rang again. Half-heartedly, I left the comfort of my bed and opened the door.

Ethan was standing in front of me, a good three feet away from the front door, with the same lopsided grin on his face that I fell in love with in high school but had started to hate now.

“What part of ‘NO’ you don’t understand, Stanton? I don’t want to see you. Period! You know, it’s never too late to shut up and mind your own business.” I was so tired. I didn’t even have the energy to be angry with him.

“Do you have any idea how adorable you look when you come in all mama bear’s form?” Out of nowhere, he came forward and pinched my cheeks. I squeezed my eyes shut as pain crept up my face, and I slapped his hands away to get him out of my personal space.

“Oh, God! What will it take for you to leave me alone?” He was acting as if yesterday’s conversation had never happened.

“We can start with a meal. After all, a neighbor is like a second family and family should eat together! And I am really sick of take-outs.” I glared at him, but he averted his eyes away, admiring the wall next to me.

“Fine!” I blurted out and for a split second, I didn’t know who was more surprised by my answer. Him or me?

“Wow! I hadn’t expected you to agree so easily. I came prepared to get down on my knees and beg.”

“Well, here is the deal; I’ll help you get your shit together, like buying some real food, teaching you a little bit about cooking, and, most importantly, how to be less annoying to your neighbors. But you have to promise me that you will stop tormenting my innocent soul the very second after that!”

Our cynical stares held each other at the place. As if daring each other to back out of the deal with our eyes. We were leaning on each other, trying to create a hard stare. To find out how serious the other person was.
