Chapter 11

Andie had wandered around the camp in a daze for far too long.

A very pissed-off daze.

What should have been post-coital bliss turned into raw rage after David fled his own cabin. She had stared after his receding form in astonishment. She wasn't sure how much time passed before she'd succumbed to tears, curled up on the floor of his tiny home, sobbing into her knees as their mingled sex scents wafted up to her nose.

Until she ran out of tears.

Avoiding everyone she knew, she'd wandered the trails around the camp's perimeter, finally reaching the ocean's shore, the sand beating her calves into rubber bands, but still she walked.

What had just happened?

Shaking him awake when she had entered his unlocked cabin was a mistake, she now realized. A big one. But she hadn't thought it would result in this.

Sex? Sure.

But what happened wasn't just sex.

It was some kind of claiming and rejection, all balled into one big, giant, festering mess.

“Why?” she moaned to the sky for the twenty-ninth time as she walked, craning her neck up, the stretch needed as her weary form trudged on. Here and there, she found freshwater sources, shifting into bear form to drink, eating berries and catching a break from her human mind's ceaseless looping.

Grief, she was learning, was easier to manage in animal form.

“You bastard,” she muttered to herself, long past worrying about her own babbling. “You didn't have a choice? You had to sleep with me? And then you told me you were bad? What the hell? Are you nuts?”

The answer, she knew, was yes.

She also knew she didn't care.

Dusk began to settle. By now her skirt was in shreds, though it still provided a modicum of modesty as she approached camp, the bonfire lit. She’d carried the garment with her, heeding Risa's advice from her Naked in Public 101 course. DarkNight would surge on, of course. No one else at camp was experiencing what she and David had just–

No.

There was no Andie and David.

There was just her.

“Screw that,” she murmured, hearing the laughter from the fire's circle, starting to sense the anticipation of the crowd. This was her fourth night here, but still, she tingled, the air charged with the electricity of excitement. DarkNight was fun.

DarkNight was riveting.

DarkNight meant everyone got laid.

And tonight, that included Andie.

“Fuck you, you fucking... fucker,” she whispered.

“What in the hell did I ever do to you?” said Roscoe, appearing at her elbow, eyeing her torn outfit. “Whew! You sure do reek.” He sniffed. “Sex. Some blackberries. A dead fish?”

“The salmon on the shore was rotten, but I realized it in time. I didn't eat it.” She sniffed her hands. Ew. He was right.

Turning away, she went back to the ocean, carefully navigating a series of rocks to the water. Wading in, she shivered. The cooler evening air was replacing the daytime warmth.

Ocean water enveloped her, the waves keeping her buoyant as she went all in, pinching her nose before plunging into the water. Her crazy, wavy hair would take a beating from all the salt water, but she'd be clean.
