Killian’s soul sang to me. With a deep breath, I trod through the jungle, my mind and heart working against each other. I wanted so badly to hate him, to beat him senseless. But my heart cracked and shattered at the thought of losing him. How could I lose the first and possibly the only being who understood me?

The closer I came to him, the harder my heart pounded, and the more my nerves vibrated. My muscles tensed. Half of me wanted to kill him. The other half ... the other half just wanted to be with him.

But he’d lied about his mother, and by doing so, he’d put us in danger, and my father died. How could I forgive him?

I shoved a branch out of my face and froze. Killian stood, eyes closed, under the waterfall. The sun reflected off the water, creating a halo around his naked upper body.

I averted my gaze.

“Staring again, I see.” Killian dove, disappeared under the surface, and reappeared at the water’s edge.

He climbed out, brushing by me to grab the black towel off the large rocks beside me. After dabbing the cotton on his face, he rubbed his head, making his damp strands stand out in all directions. “You need something?”

I narrowed my eyes at the coldness in his voice. How could he treat me like that after what happened? Hold it together. I needed him. “Yeah, your help.”

He cocked an eyebrow. “Oh, yeah?”

No breaking eye contact, I moved closer to him. “I need you to break Oliver’s chains.”

Killian rubbed his temple. “I can’t.”

“And why is that?” I stabbed his chest with my finger. “Mommy won’t let you.”

His eyes flicked to the jungle. “Coy, I—”

“You owe me for what you did.” As hard as I wanted to conceal my disappointment, my face still fell. “You lied to me, Killian.”

He shook his head. “Lied to you? About what?”

“About Lilith!”

“What? You knew she was my mother. And I told you about the sword. Am I missing something?”

What was he talking about? “I didn’t know she was your mother. I thought Vepar was.”

“What? The mermaid?” He hitched his neck back. “Where the hell did you get that idea?”

Of course. Fool me twice… “Mele. Surprise, surprise.” I massaged my eyelids. “When you killed Vepar, I thought you’d changed your mind about the sword. If I knew about Lilith, I would’ve left without the cure. She’s too dangerous.”

“You would’ve let Jeremiah die?” He scoffed. “And where would you have gone?”

“He died, anyway.” I swallowed. “Maybe we should’ve gone back to Haven. Anywhere would’ve been better than here.”

He growled and sat on the boulder behind him. “And what good would that have done? Do you think Theon would’ve given you the cure? Spared your friends after? Jeremiah? I doubt it.”

“Lilith killed Jeremiah.” My lower lip trembled. “He’s gone.” I held the sob in my chest.

Stay strong. You can do this.

Killian’s hand rolled over his head. “You have no idea what Lilith is capable of.”

I folded my arms and peered at a yellow and black butterfly flitting from a purple flower to a blue one.
