Chapter 22

Most of the platoon stayed aboard with Nachdainn and his crew, but I took my team up to the top of the watchtower, where we had something of a view of the city, and we could hear at least some of what was going on below.

That last part was an immediate source of regret. Octrallach, even gagged, had gotten noisy, and the sounds he was making were not calculated to give a man a sound night’s sleep.

Not that we were likely to get much more than snatches of rest for the foreseeable future. A livid, angry glow had sprung up on the north side of the city, and while we couldn’t see what was going on, we could hear. The sounds of battle drifted over the sides of the great hill, and the tang of smoke reached us out on the harbor. The Fohorimans and their minions had started their assault.

Santos was watching, his face lit by the dull orange glow. He’d finally started to let his beard grow, much like most of the rest of us, though he still kept his head as closely cropped as he could. “This puts us in an interesting position.”

“Bit of an understatement.” Another muffled howl of rage and hatred filtered up from below. “For one thing, what do we do with him if the city falls while we’re out here?”

Santos glanced over his shoulder. “Huh. That wasn’t actually the first thing that came to mind, honestly.” He turned back toward the fires. “We’re out here, while they’re getting the full weight of that army thrown at the walls. Not that there’s a whole lot we could do at this point. Even with the explosives we’ve got, it would be a drop in the bucket against those numbers.” He squinted, an almost pained expression. “If the Menninkai fall, then we’re back to square one with no local support.”

“I’ll admit, that’s farther than I’ve thought.” I’d been a bit more worried about getting through the next few hours, ever since we’d gone ashore to draw Bres out. And his boss.

I leaned against the wall, peering out the arrow slit toward the fires. We couldn’t see the flames themselves. The bulk of the hill and the inner walls blocked them out. But they had to be pretty big to be visible from where we stood. “I’ll be honest, this whole op has gone pretty far off the plan. First, we end up caught in a defensive action as soon as we hit the ground, because the allies we were counting on to give us a base of operations have got their backs to the wall, and now it sounds like Dragon Mask might have been a part of something a lot bigger and a lot worse than we thought.”

Santos shook his head, his eyes still fixed on the walls and the city, silhouetted by the flickering light of the fires. “And we’re still no closer to even knowing where to start looking for our missing guys.
