Sorin woke what felt like just an hour later. He sat up, rubbing his eyes. His head was heavy from the remains of the wine. He looked around and tried to realize what had woken him. He stood. The room looked just like it always did; fireplace empty, doors closed, bed empty.

Bed empty.

He swore and pulled on his boots, hopping on one foot as he fell out of his room. Peter was already on his way to him.

“The beach,” Peter said and Sorin cursed loudly.

He ran down the hall, ignoring his parents when they came out of their room. He took the stairs two at a time and went out through the back. He had to get to her before something horrible happened. What if she was mesmerized by the mist again? He prayed to whatever deity was watching them that she’d be okay.

The moon wasn’t full, but the clear sky gave it the chance to illuminate everything around him. He sprinted down the path and scanned the beach for her. She wasn’t near the cliff and he called her name, ready to run into the water if he had to. Thankfully, he found her. But she wasn’t sleepwalking. She was very much awake and sitting on the rock, her knees pulled to her chest.

“Thank the gods,” he panted, stopping beside her. She didn’t look at him. “Don’t do that. I was worried you had fallen in the water and-.”

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” she said. He stared at her. “Let’s just stop pretending and go back to normal.”

“Why are you saying this?” he asked. He had been sure everything was going well. “What happened?”

“I got up for some warm milk,” she said. “I ran into Sigrid. She told me….” She took a deep breath. “Sorin, is it true you two had an affair when you were younger?”

Sorin’s jaw dropped. “Come again!?”

She flinched at his raised voice. “She said that you two had an affair, that you had hoped to have a child so you wouldn’t need to get married,” she said in a rush.

He groaned and pulled her to her feet. He made her face him.

“You have to stop listening to her,” he said. “No. I never had any kind of affair with her. Yes, I had hoped to never get married. I knew I’d have to once Charlotte died, though.”

“I’m sorry,” she said, tears glistening in her eyes. “I shouldn’t listen to her, I know, but it’s so hard.”

He wiped her tears away. He remembered what her mother had said when he spoke to her earlier that day.

“Just be honest with her. Tell her the truth.”

“Ariette, I need to tell you something,” he said, taking her hands. “The truth is… I have been keeping something from you. Mostly because I didn’t understand it at the time. Now, though…. Ariette, I’m starting to-.”

Before he could finish, though, a strong wind blew around them. Ariette cried out in surprise as sand swirled around their bodies. They covered their eyes.
