No one said a word until we were locked securely inside our hotel room. I tossed the Morningstar knife on the bed and we stared at it in silence as if it would move on its own.

I looked at the others. “That’s definitely the Morningstar knife.”

“Yes it is,” Michael mumbled.

Tristan watched the knife on the bed, his eyes a tumult of emotions. “I guess the hunt for Lucifer is officially on.”

“Well, we might have one other obstacle.” I sat at the edge of the bed, far away from the knife’s wicked blade. “Lucifer sent Tobias and Gerta here to search for the Morningstar. I don’t know if they actually knew what they were looking for or not, but they heard about a weapon housed by the humans with the power to kill Lucifer and were trying to find it. I was fighting them when I lost you both. I think they want the knife so they can use it along with the weapon Lucifer is building against the angels, but something doesn’t add up.”

Michael ran a hand through his golden curls. “You think he lied about completing the weapon?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know, but it sounds like he has a hidden agenda we know nothing about.”

“Hmm.” Tristan rubbed at his chin. “Either way, I think our time in Paris is up. It’s best if we head out at the earliest opportunity. We’ll leave first thing tomorrow morning.”

“We have what we came for; we might as well,” I said as I snatched up the knife. There was no way I would allow it to get stolen or lost. I walked over to my suitcase and wrapped the knife up in some of my clothes, then stuck it deep inside under several layers of clothing. Until we were on a flight back home and safely back in Los Angeles, I wouldn’t take my eyes off that knife.

“I should inform Jacques that this is our last night here,” Tristan cut into the awkward silence. He was still moving a little sluggish, but moving nonetheless.

“I’ll stay with her,” Michael volunteered, but I shook my head.

“Go with him, Michael. He needs you more than I do.” I grimaced at the look Tristan gave me. I didn’t mean to insult him, but he didn’t look a hundred percent right now. I was sure he needed more blood, more than I could possibly give him, and if the humans decided to attack he’d be too weak to withstand it.

“I’ll be fine,” he snarled, clearly frustrated.

I reached for his hand and caressed the top of it. “I know you will be, because Michael will be with you. Don’t fight me on this.”

We stared at each other for a moment before he sighed heavily. “Don’t leave this room, you understand?” I nodded.

They left and I stayed behind in the quiet of the hotel room, protecting the one thing that could send Lucifer to hell and keep Michael safe from the wrath of the angels.

No pressure.
