Cassandra

Cassandra clasped her mother’s hand. “I didn’t tell you right away because I knew how hard it would be for you to discover that you had a daughter who you don’t remember. I wanted to ease you into it. The plan was to tell you everything on Friday, which was why Roni and Sylvia were here. But you were so rattled after learning that you’re immortal that I decided to wait. I wasn’t even going to tell you today, but Roni was impatient.” She cast him a reproachful look. “His empathy needs some work.”

As Geraldine squeezed her hand in silent forgiveness, the front door opened and Onegus walked in.

“I came as soon as I could.” It took him one look at Geraldine and her to realize that he was late for the big reveal. “Can I offer anyone a glass of wine?”

Her mother lifted her eyes to him. “I would appreciate it. Thank you.”

“Does wine affect you?” Roni asked. “Because it shouldn’t. Immortals metabolize alcohol quickly.”

She shrugged. “I like the taste, and since I never tried to get drunk, I didn’t expect anything else.” Glancing at the phone in Cassandra’s other hand, she made no move to reach for it.

“I think you should look at the pictures.” Cassandra offered her the device. “Maybe they will jog your memory.”

Geraldine nodded. “Let’s do it together.”

Onegus returned with two bottles of wine, and Connor brought the wine glasses. He passed them around, and then Onegus did the pouring.

As Geraldine lifted hers with a hand that still shook, Cassandra patted her knee. “Are you okay?”

“Not really, but let’s see those pictures. Maybe something will pierce the veil and release those memories.” She lifted her other hand to her temple. “I want to believe that they are still there, and that I just can’t access them. That gives me hope that one day my mind will heal, and I’ll remember my life before the accident.”

Unless the amnesia was mental rather than physical, her mother’s memories were most likely gone forever. But Cassandra wasn’t going to say that. Hope was a powerful thing, and taking it away could have a devastating effect.

She shifted her gaze to Roni. “Is the phone locked?”

“I disabled the lock before handing it over. You can just open it.”

Sylvia cast him a curious look. “You never unlock your phone, not even for me.”

He smirked. “Are you jealous? Do you think that I’m hiding messages from secret girlfriends?”

Her lips twitching with a suppressed smile, she crossed her arms over her chest and pretended to glare at him. “You’d better not.”

Leaning over, he kissed her smack on the lips. “You know where I am every minute of the day. Besides, we are bonded mates. It is virtually impossible for me to even think of another. Not that I ever would. I have the best of the best.”

Watching the exchange, Geraldine sighed. “That’s so sweet.”

Provided that it was genuine, it really was. If Cassandra had witnessed a similar thing in the human world, she would have rolled her eyes and called it fake.
