“Bastian, darling.” Lizbeth, the ancient vampire who looks like a teenage girl, embraces Bastian and drops a kiss on each cheek. Then, as if she’s forcing herself to look at something objectionable, her gaze jerks to me. “You’ve brought a guest.”

Her voice is heavy with icy disapproval.

“A guest? What? The prisoner is to sit in on our meeting, then? The hunter has been invited to the table? What is the meaning of this?” Tyresius, who’s probably a bit younger than Lizbeth but looks like he has one foot in the grave, glares from Bastian to me and back. He has deep crow's feet around his eyes, but his eyes themselves are full of an ageless cunning.

The other council members, all men—though some look more like boys—exchange looks and disconcerted murmurs. I don’t blame them. I wouldn’t want me here either.

“She is my ward,” Bastian points out. “She goes where I tell her.”

“And why, darling, did you tell her to come here? For God’s sake, Bastian, we have vampire business to discuss. Send her away so we can begin, I’m tired of waiting.” Lizbeth flops gracefully across her chair, raising a dramatic hand to her smooth forehead.

Bastian takes my hand and firmly leads me to the chair beside his. He pulls it out for me, and Tyresius makes a wheezing, angry sound.

“This is ridiculous! Send her away. You’ll be telling our secrets to the human governments next.”

“She is a vampire,” Bastian insists. “As it is my job to indoctrinate her into vampire society, I have decided that the best way to do that is to show her how things work at the top. Any other objections?”

Several vampires on the council shift in their seats as if they’re about to speak, but Bastian cuts a sharp look their way. A few of them glance between him and Tyresius as if trying to decide which side to pick, but none of them say anything.

I sit down, assuming that’s the end of it, but Tyresius keeps going, arguing with Bastian as if the prince is his child or something. Bastian ignores him, which seems to piss the ancient-looking fucker off in a big way, but eventually everybody settles down.

Although there are a lot of suspicious looks cast in my direction, I decide to take a page out of Bastian’s book and ignore them.

“First order of business,” Lizbeth says as she shuffles papers in front of her. She glances at me, her mouth twisted in a disapproving frown, then returns to her papers with an air of momentary resignation. “The tribute contracts. Word is getting out that the contracts are effectively null and void as soon as a blood bond is initiated. We don’t know how the information is spreading, but it isn’t hard to figure out. Certain tributes like to play the system, meaning they leave here with the obligations of their contracts fulfilled and the freedom to speak at will.”
