JESSICA

Jessica slammed the door of MAC Investigations hard enough behind her to rattle the doorframe and tried counting to ten in an attempt to clear the red mist which was rapidly descending.

It didn’t work. She was still furious with Connor for lying about Rae-Lynn.

She let out a frustrated roar and kicked the front tire of the Silverado, startling a passerby.

She counted to ten again. Reached fifty and was still pissed.

Jessica climbed inside the truck, started the engine, and tuned the radio to a hard rock and metal station. Cranked the volume up so loud the reverberations from the speakers rattled her bones. With a shaking hand, she tapped in the address she was headed for into the GPS system. Took a deep breath and pulled into the traffic, banged the steering wheel hard in time with the music. She knew she was angrier at herself than she was at Connor, for being stupid and naive enough to fall for his lies again.

After what happened with Tommy, Jessica swore she’d never be duped so easily by a guy ever again. Tommy had changed everything. How the hell was she supposed to believe in happy ever after when someone she’d loved—and who had claimed to love her back—could hurt her so badly? Was able to lie to her so easily? She knew she had commitment issues, that she’d find it hard to trust anyone again, but she’d figured being on her own was way better than the risk of deception and betrayal and hurt. That she’d finally chosen to let her guard down with someone like Connor, who had form when it came to lying and messing with her heart, made everything a million times worse. It wasn’t even about the kiss; it was the fact that she’d opened up to him about her past, about Tommy, that really pissed her off.

Jessica joined the 10 heading east and her heartbeat began to slow to a regular beat again as she picked up speed on the freeway. She lit a cigarette. By the time she’d arrived in Downtown LA an hour later, the rage had dropped from red alert to amber. She found a space in the parking lot of a King Taco where she used her cell phone to search Google for a telephone number. She hit the call icon.

“Haywood, Dunne & Smith.”

The woman’s voice was deep and husky and sexy. More suited to talking dirty on premium-rate chat lines than answering calls at a legal firm.

“I’d like to speak to Zachary Dunne,” Jessica said.

“Can I ask who’s calling?”

“My name is Jessica Shaw. I’m a private investigator looking into the disappearance of Amanda Meyers.”

There was a pause, then the woman said, “Oh, are you a friend of Matt’s?”

Connor’s contact from the bar. Apparently as attractive in the flesh as she sounded on the phone. Jessica wondered if he’d kissed her too after a few drinks.

“No, we’re not friends. We work together.”

“Mr. Dunne is out at lunch right now.”

“I don’t suppose you know where?”

“Yes, I do.
