THIRTY-TWO

The man in the black suit watched the commotion at the cottage with keen interest. He held back, lingering out of sight at the corner of a rutted dirt trail that led to a farm some quarter-mile distant. He had briefly considered moving closer, maybe even sneaking into the cottage to get a closer look, but he knew that would not be wise. It would be impossible to conceal himself in such a confined space, and he did not want Mina or her unknown companion to spot him.

When the hysterical woman had bolted from the cottage and fled shrieking down the street toward the end terrace house, the constable shared with his wife Molly near the village’s High Street, the man in the black suit knew that his caution had been rewarded. If he had tried to enter the dwelling, he would almost certainly have encountered this woman, which would have made things difficult. When she returned less than ten minutes later with the constable in tow, he smiled.

The policeman would not arrest or otherwise unduly harass Mina or her companion, he was sure, even though he didn’t yet know what had occurred in the cottage. His performance earlier in the police station had been flawless. The constable had believed every word he said. It didn’t hurt that the man was afraid of him. He could see it in the constable’s eyes. This was not an uncommon reaction. The man in the black suit used his physical appearance to his best advantage, knowing that passive intimidation often got him further than outright threats.

The man in the black suit stood with his hands pushed deep into his pockets, ignoring the biting wind that chafed at his face, and the drizzle of rain that slicked his hair. He waited and watched until Mina and the stranger left together and hurried back toward the pub where they were staying. They were deep in conversation, but he could not hear what they were saying. It didn’t matter. The investigation that had brought them here was of no concern to him. All that mattered was the girl.

When he was sure they were far enough away, he slipped out of concealment and strolled toward the cottage. But instead of entering, he kept going until he reached the constable’s house and stepped into the darkness between it and a smaller single-story bungalow next door. Here he waited. The policeman would return eventually, and when he did, the man in the black suit would reinforce his message from earlier in the day, just to make sure the constable knew who was in charge.
