Chapter Thirteen

Rordan couldn’t believe that Fianna was there. She was the reason he had quit swimming because he couldn’t stop thinking about her. After running into her on the stairs, he hadn’t seen her for the rest of the day. And he had looked for her.

“I’m disturbing you again,” she said.

He slowly shook his head. “Never. You okay? I’ve not seen you since this morning.”

“I’ve been walking the property.”

“Looking for anything in particular?”

She scratched her neck. “I wanted to do an entire sweep of the estate, and I needed to do it on my own.”

“You weren’t the only one missing. The other guests have been looking for Dorcha.”

“That’s not like him.”

Rordan swiped at another droplet of water running down his face. “I don’t suppose you’ve run across Ruarc?”

“No. I was about to ask you the same thing.”

“Sadly, I’ve not seen him.”

She swallowed and glanced around. “Well, I, uh…I guess I’ll head back.”

“Don’t go.”

Her gaze jerked to his as she stood silently. Rordan wasn’t sure what he was doing. He needed information for his mission, though he wasn’t sure he’d get much—if anything—from Fianna. But she was Dorcha’s sister. Then there was his ever-increasing yearning for her. He knew it was madness, pure idiocy, to tempt himself so.

The grass-covered mountains rising in the distance appeared like shadowed spectators in the darkness. Rordan had admired their beauty earlier, but now, he couldn’t take his eyes off Fianna. She had remained in her jeans and sweater. He thought about how smooth and soft her skin had felt, and he desperately wanted to touch her again.

“All right,” she murmured.

Rordan teleported to the beach, calling his clothes to him as he did. The pebbled shoreline crunched beneath his feet as he moved closer to her. “I just thought you might need someone to talk to.”

“Do I look lonely?”

“You look like someone who has a lot on their mind.”

She twisted her lips. “I realized something today. I am lonely. I’m surrounded by others, but I don’t have any friends. I used to have some. Lots of them.”

“Friends are good. Some you can count on, but not all.”

Her eyes were filled with regret and doubt. “You’re the first person I’ve talked to about anything in what feels like eons. I talk to Dorcha and my da, but it’s always about what they have planned, and what they want me to do. I talk to the guards, giving instructions. No one ever asks me about me. Until you.”

Whatever hope Rordan had of keeping a lid on his attraction was blown away with those two words.

Fianna laughed and looked down to kick at the rocks. “I’m thinking of who I am, who I was, and who I want to be.”

“Did you decide?”

She met his eyes and shrugged, a smile on her lips. “I came to one conclusion, though.”

“What was that?”

“That my father and brother use me as nothing more than a slave. They’re so afraid I’m going to do something that one of them has to know my whereabouts at all times.
