AMAYA

Days passed. How long? One week? Two? I’d only spoken to Blaise on a few occasions, but I’d taken advantage of my time with him, quizzing him on everything he knew about the jungle, like the plants and their properties, which roots to boil to make a poultice, wild edibles and where to find them, and the best ways to sterilize water.

Even with the information, we still had to be prepared before attempting our escape. While I’d been able to gather our supplies, it had been storming for a week straight, and we hadn’t yet made our break. But tonight, the rain outside the windows tapered to a slow drizzle, and I couldn’t wait any longer.

Night came slowly. The wind gusted, and vines thick with thorns pounded against the slim rectangles of glass. After midnight, I grabbed my makeshift canteens and blades, then pulled on the work boots. Without socks, they would most likely rub blisters, but I had worse things to worry about.

I paced to the doorway and listened before opening the door. With clammy hands, I grabbed the handle and turned. The door swung open, revealing an empty hallway. Red lights glowed from the single SALIDA sign. Its promise of escape tempted me, but I couldn’t leave yet. This time, I wouldn’t go alone.

My footsteps sounded too loud, and my pounding heart sounded even louder. I half-expected Mr. Emmerson to step out from one of the rooms, or one of the staff to find me. But the hallway remained empty until I made it to a door exactly like my own.

I grabbed the knob and turned just as a clap of thunder rumbled outside.

Blaise stood by the window. I had to catch my breath as a shiver ran down my spine. An amber glow shimmered from his pupils. Tilting his head, he smiled slightly, showing the edge of his teeth, and I got the impression he was sizing me up, as if I were his prey.

“Blaise,” I said softly. “Are you okay?”

He blinked, and the wild retreated. How much longer would he remain in control of himself? If I took him out in the jungle with me, I had no guarantee he wouldn’t turn violent.

But he had a family somewhere. He’d been taken against his will just like me. I couldn’t leave him here, no matter how dangerous he had the potential of becoming.

Besides, it wasn’t like I couldn’t defend myself.

“Let’s go,” I whispered, impatience in my voice.

He gave a nod, then followed me out of his room. I handed one of the makeshift canteens to him, and one of the blades. He took them without saying a word, his eyes wide and darting.

I continued with him behind me. Our footsteps sounded too loud, and I feared at any moment, one of the guards would appear from the shadows and capture us, tying us to our beds.

It was only because of my cooperation that the Emmersons had allowed me so much freedom. If they caught me escaping this time, I had no doubt they would subdue me until I lost my mind completely.
