Deep purple lit the clouds when her eyes opened. Silence stretched across the world and she waited several moments after waking for the heat to return and break the peace. When it didn’t, she pushed herself up and took stock of her room.

How had her blankets gotten there? Her quilted coverlet was by the door, a strange nest of some sort where she ended up falling asleep. And here by the window there were her sheets all twisted up. It looked like she had tried to make some sort of rope… Grimacing, she spent several minutes undoing the work of the crazed madwoman of the night before. It would be her little secret. Once the blankets and coverlet were satisfactorily restored to the bed, she pulled on her thickest shawl to fight the extraordinary chill in the room. She had rejected even the idea of hot bricks the night before and not a dredge of heat remained in the room, making it all the more eerie as she looked around the room that had become unfamiliar overnight.

The key scraped in the lock and she winced as the doorknob gave her away, grimacing as she pulled the door open as quietly as possible.

Darcy still slept. Unlike her, he did not have a pillow. He rested instead against the doorframe, arms crossed over his chest and hands tucked under his arms. Elizabeth’s eye roamed over him, noting first the dried, wrinkled rag tied around his face. It had slipped down to his chin at some point, exposing a straight Roman nose and a sharply defined upper lip to the cool morning air. His lips were parted some, tiny breaths puffing out.

She tried not to imagine it the night before. Imagine him. It felt dirty to think of such thoughts, desires, of the gentleman who had so effectively come to her rescue. Even in the height of her madness, she had not breached the respect she had for him, and her only shameful break in composure was politely but firmly rebuffed. Heat stung her cheeks remembering how he chastised her for opening the window.

But the moon’s grasp had not left her totally and a lingering flame licked at her insides now, making her stomach clench as she gazed down at him. He truly was beautiful. Thick curls not wholly suitable for a polished gentleman begged for her to run her fingers through them, itching to satisfy her curiosity about how soft they were. And they would be soft, she decided. Despite his stoney exterior, Darcy had more soft spots than many gentlemen in a similar position.

“Mr. Darcy?” she whispered. Her shawl slipped as she knelt down by his hip and she tugged it up her shoulder again, glancing down the empty hall before her gaze returned to the slumbering angel in her doorway. He was really quite handsome. “Mr. Darcy?”

Not a single long, dark eyelash twitched at her whisper. Only when Elizabeth reached out and touched his shoulder did Darcy respond to her presence.
