Chapter 14

Every few minutes, Elizabeth peeked out the side of the shade pulled down on the carriage window. All she wished was to see a piece of the land she knew as well as the back of her hand, as she had wandered her father’s estate, as well as visited most of the other homes nearby. Finally, she noticed her favorite place on her father’s lands, the one place she enjoyed above all others when she walked. Oakham Mount. Just the sight of it brought her peace. She was near her home, and all would be well. The men in the carriage would assist in ridding Meryton and the lands surrounding it of the officers, seeing that they were punished for their behavior, and hopefully, they would learn where the females were. Then Elizabeth’s family could be whole once more.

“You will need to remain on the upper floor of the house, so no one sees you.” Darcy restated his instructions to Elizabeth. “I assume that the men in the area will pay a call on Charles. We cannot have them finding you at Netherfield.”

“I have agreed with you, Mr Darcy. You have my word that I will do as you say.”

Bingley was nervous. “Are we near the estate?”

Elizabeth smiled. “We are on the estate, near a mile from the house. My family’s estate is two miles in that direction.” She said as she motioned in the direction of Longbourn.”

Darcy knew that the situation was difficult for Elizabeth. He had determined to speak with Mr Bennet, and if possible, inform the man of his daughter being safe. But he would have to be certain the gentleman would be able to keep the secret.

The sun had just barely set when the carriage pulled to a stop in front of the manor house of Netherfield Park. Elizabeth pulled her bonnet down to hide her face, then waited for the men to exit before Darcy turned and handed her down. They hurried inside the house, meeting Mrs Browning waiting for them just inside the door.

“I am pleased you have arrived. The cook has cold meat, cheese, and bread for your supper. We have your rooms prepared. Miss Moreland, if you will follow me, I have chosen one of the best rooms for you. Lucy, you come too. Miss Moreland’s trunk is in her chambers waiting for you to unpack.”

The maid bobbed her head, following the ladies up the stairs. The men brought up the rear of the party, waiting their turn of learning where their chambers would be.

At the top of the stairs, Mrs Browning motioned to some doors. “Miss Moreland, your room will be here.” Indicating the door on the west side of the hall. “Master William, you shall be here.” She pointed out the door across the hall from Elizabeth’s rooms.

Mrs Browning moved down the hall to the door at the end. “This is the master’s chambers, so naturally it should be your chambers, Mr Bingley.”

Everyone made their way to the rooms they had been assigned and were soon refreshing themselves.
