Chapter Seventeen
Darcy was assisted the next morning by Dr. Burns, who taught him how to fix the unfamiliar clasps and told him how his new clothing should hang. Darcy was thankful that the trousers, matching jacket, and the dress shirt that he was given were still in a style quite similar to his own. He was still unsure whether he approved of the clothing that the scientists wore. Dr. Burns was dressed more informally todayâas were the other physicians who soon joined them--Darcy realized as they walked down the hallway. Dr. Ellington wore a rather tightly fitted shirt, and Darcy found himself feeling uncomfortable yet again in her presence in such attire, doing his best never to allow his eyes to linger in her direction.
Much to his relief, when Elizabeth emerged from her room, he found she had not been forced into such scandalous attire, but rather she was wearing a modest dress of a style and color that suited her very well. He was glad to see that long dresses were still an option.
âGood morning, Miss Bennet,â he greeted her, with his usual restraint.
âGood morning to you, Mr. Darcy,â Elizabeth replied with a bright smile and her required curtsey, which Darcy immediately returned with a bow.
Dr. Ellington grinned.
âPray tell me what you find amusing, Dr. Ellington?â Elizabeth enquired.
âYou curtseyed to him. Thatâs, well, interesting.â
Elizabeth looked even more puzzled. âBut Mr. Darcy is a man of means, one of a class far above my own. It is necessary that I acknowledge that fact and show him the respect his status demands.â
âNot any more, it isnât,â Dr. Ellington replied. âThatâs a habit youâre going to have to drop if youâre going to fit in out there.â
Elizabeth looked crestfallen, but Darcy gave her a rare and reassuring smile.
âCome on,â Dr. Burns said. âYou have lots to learn, and the sooner you get started, the sooner youâll be better prepared for life nowadays. Weâre taking you to the movie theatre, where weâve got lots of documentaries set up for you.â
Both had attended the theatre in London, so neither felt anxious about the announcement. They were pleased to find that, for the most part, it lived up to their expectations, except with no boxes for the upper classes to sit and a rectangle similar to what theyâd been given the day before instead of a stage; except that it was much larger than the ones they had held in their hands. They knew now that it was used for viewing, so both were excited about what they were about to be shown.
They were escorted to two seats side by side and urged to sit down, both of them rather shy at their closeness. Darcy gave a start as he leaned back in his chair and it moved, causing the scientists much amusement. Dr. Johnson took pity on them and patiently showed them how the chairs adjusted for comfort while Dr. Ellington and Dr. Burns slipped away and returned with their arms brimming with food and drinks.
