CHAPTER 9
After parking in the hotel lot, Jay unloaded the car while Lark took her dogs to a patch of grass. Once they were done doing their business, she met Jay at the door. Dropping the doggie bags in the garbage, she followed him in. They hadnât checked out of their rooms and still had their card keys, so they didnât need to go to reception. Luke was in Jayâs room, waiting for them.
âDid you stay here all night?â Lark asked.
Without looking up, Luke shook his head, his hair flopped into his eyes. âNope. Went home, came back. Found some stuff. Texted you pics.â
âDid you sleep at all?â
âAlso nope. Went home, came back. Found some stuff. Texted you pics.â
âYou already said that,â Lark told him.
âYep. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.â
What an ass, Lark thought.
Jay huffed a laugh, and Luke finally looked at her.
âOops.â She had said that out loud. She shrugged and smiled.
âPlay stupid games, win stupid prizes,â Luke muttered and went back to his screen.
âHave you heard anything from Gordon and Greene?â Jay smoothly got them back on topic.
âJust the preliminary findings. Lark was right. The letters are legit. They were from her father written to her while he was locked up. They were all returned unopened?â His eyes met Larkâs once more in question.
âYeah, they were unopened. I think I got a couple before I lived with my grandparents. My mom was usually too drunk to remember things like the mail. Or work. Or feeding her daughter.â
Well, sheâd gone and made it awkward. Double oops.
Luke looked at her again. âAll the letters were opened. So the question is, did your dad open them, or was it Lawson?â
She shrugged. âDad already knew what was in them, so my guess is this Lawson guy.â
Jay looked up from his phone. âKyle texted me that heâs been trying to track Lawsonâs movements since the escape. So far, they have nothing. Heâs like a ghost.â
âNothing about his file has ever said anything about whether heâs a ghost or not, but Iâll assume heâs not.â Luke thought he was funny.
âHa ha. Moving on. Lawson is of average intelligence. He never showed signs of masterminding anything, so either he has skills we donât know about, more kills under his belt that we donât know about, or heâs got help.â
Luke zeroed in on that. âYou think heâs got a partner?â
Jay didnât look like he liked that idea. âMy gut says no. He might have killed more people than we can confirm, but I donât think he shares well. Thereâs a control aspect here with him. I want to look into Larkâs dadâs death. The file never said who killed him?â
âNo, the prison records showed a fight that day and several inmates were stabbed, but Seawell was the only fatality.â
âThat doesnât raise red flags to you?â
âOn it.â After a few quick strokes of the keys, Luke said, âThereâs nothing in the official file, but I have...unofficial files. I found a note by one of the guards who quit without notice before that fight.
