I didn’t know how to feel. In a way, I wanted to be mad at Malique, but she didn’t do shit to me. It was her dumb ass mom who needed to let us go home before I started more problems up in her shit.

“In here, Simona,” Mona called out after we stepped into the house.

Mona was gorgeous. She was almost the spitting image of Malique down to the body shape. She didn’t look like she even had kids, which was crazy to me.

I let Malique walk into the spacious office first, and was right behind her. She sat down in one of the chairs, and I didn’t.

“So, what’s up?” Malique questioned. “And please make it quick. I got a life to get back to.”

Mona ran her fingers through her hair.

“I think it’s time you join me,” she said. “You’re grown now, I taught you how to handle yourself, and you should be here with your mom working—”

“No,” Malique cut her short. “I don’t want no parts of this lifestyle you live.”

Mona’s brows dipped together in confusion. “Why? It’s because of your father, isn’t it?”

“No. It’s because I live a normal life that I enjoy. I got a job and I’m good at it. I don’t wanna kill people for a living. I’m not you. I can’t do that and just move on like it didn’t happen. Some of us have a conscience.”

Mona couldn’t believe what her daughter was telling her, but she should’ve. It wasn’t like Mona was around.

“Well, I was only asking to be polite. My mind is already made up. You will come live here with me. I’ll teach you everything you need to know just like when you were—”

“She said no,” I chimed in. “I know you heard her because I heard her.”

Mona glared at me, which only caused Malique to look at me. From the look she wore on her face, I knew she didn’t hear what I said. It was gonna take some time to get used to her condition.

Reluctantly, I took the seat on the left side of her, then turned my attention back to Mona,

“I’m trying to have a conversation with Simona, not you. You don’t have to answer for her.”

“I’m not answering for her, bruh. She already told you what her answer was, and you said she basically ain’t have no choice. Fuck you think this is?”

Mona closed her eyes and drew in a deep breath. “Who are you? You said her future husband, but I know you’re not her fiancé because there’s not a ring on her finger. I hope you wouldn’t accept a proposal without a ring, Simona.”

Malique rolled her eyes.

“Don’t worry about who the fuck I am. I’m the man in her life who’s not gonna let no dumb shit like this go down. She’s not staying here; she’s not working for you. You not even a good mom, for real. She said it’s been five years since she last saw you. Ask yourself why she would even wanna be around yo’ stupid ass.
