Chapter Eighteen

Monday, January 6, 2:45 pm

I explained to Amir about Brittany being missing and the profile I’d stumbled over. “I know the sister’s name is Laila Burns, and the mother is Jeanette Burns. Can we find out anything about the sister and even more importantly, where these girls are?”

Amir asked, “Can you tell where the girls are from the background in this photo?”

“They’re outside. It’s not my sister’s house. I’m going to send you a screenshot.”

“All right, that will work. You said Bev has an app.”

I looked up to see Bev staring at me.

“Who’s that?” Bev asked.

“I just called Amir. This is his area of expertise. He can help us locate Brittany. Did you find anything on the app? Amir, I’m going to put you on speaker phone.”

“Hey, Ms. Bev. We will find Brittany, don’t worry.”

Bev frowned at first, but then nodded, even though Amir couldn’t see her. “Okay, I appreciate any help you can give, Amir. I do have two places I’m not familiar with showing on the app. She has been coming to and leaving church with her friend, Laila, so this could be her house.”

“That’s good. Does the app show a map with pins?”

“Yes, that’s right,” Bev confirmed.

Amir asked, “Good, we can use the GPS in my car to locate those places on the map.”

Bev swallowed. “You’re going to look for them?”

Amir said, “Of course. Hey, Serena, why don’t you swing by here and we can go to these addresses. Ms. Bev, it may be better for you to stay at home, you know, just in case Brittany comes home.”

Good idea, Amir.

Of course, he knew I wanted to track down and talk to the older girl too.

Bev seemed unsure about the plan. “Okay. I guess I better call Clay. He should be out of court by now.”

“Good. Tell him that we will keep you both updated. And I will bring Brittany home.”

I left the house before Bev changed her mind and wanted to hop in the car with me. My sister was usually a calm person, but when it came to her kids, she went all Mama Bear.

I arrived at Amir’s house in about ten minutes. He was already outside.

I jumped out and headed towards him. “So, do you have an idea where we’re going?”

“Yep, hop in. I know the neighborhood. I have a friend over that way.”

I watched as Amir punched the address into his GPS. The familiar female voice started her instructions.

“Thanks for doing this, by the way. ”

Amir grinned. “Not a problem. Brittany skipping school…it can’t be all that bad at home.”

I shook my head. “No. More like she’s at the age when your mom or dad are telling you what you can’t do, but all your friends are doing it. It feels like a tragedy at that age.”

As Amir turned into a cul-de-sac, I realized I recognized this neighborhood. “Hey, my dad had a place over here when I was in junior high.” I’d been back in Georgetown going on two years now, but there still were places I’d never visited.
