Chapter Seven

Philippa’s mouth opened and closed, and opened again before she managed to get the words out. Weston’s gaze did not waver, but begged her to accept. He was asking her to dance. He had never asked her to dance before. Excitement bubbled followed by uncertainty.

Philippa didn’t know why, but she hesitated. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Artemisia nudge with her chin for her to accept. Philippa could not help but wonder if her entire family was conspiring. She was still in mourning, still trying to accept all that had occurred within the past several days, still trying to rediscover herself. Could she really take this next step?

Throwing all caution to the wind, she placed her hand in Weston’s. Intense warmth suffused her body, a feeling she had never experienced before, but now having it, wished she had.

Philippa stood to her full height, barely reaching to his shoulder, but somehow they seemed to fit perfectly together. Nigel and Artemisia were already waltzing when Weston guided her away from the settee.

Enjoyed being in his arms. It was if she were seventeen again.

And, in that moment, she fell in love with him all over again.

He guided her into another turn, his body inched even closer, and then all of a sudden he stopped. The music continued on while Weston held her in place for only a moment before he released her hand and took several steps backward. His breathing was uneven, unsure.

“Thank you for the dance,” Weston murmured for her ears only.

His brown eyes held hers. Time ceased to exist. Philippa opened her mouth to speak, but Aunt Lou’s praise broke the spell. “That was lovely. Both my nieces are exquisite dancers.”

Weston had wanted nothing more than to be alone. The dance he shared with Philippa earlier in the evening had only added to his incertitude. Artemisia and her family seemed to encourage his affections for Philippa, but doubt and past hurts constantly reared their ugly heads.

After their dance, he attempted to avoid Philippa by retiring to his room, which only served to frustrate him beyond belief. There were too many things reeling about his mind to rest. He was anxious about what
