Chapter 8
"Hey, man, ready to rule the school?" Bruce asked Todd as they walked into the halls of Sweet Valley High on Monday morning.
"You got it," Todd returned with a grin. He was glad he and Bruce were hanging out again. Sometimes Bruce acted a little too arrogant, but for the most part he was a really cool guy.
Todd and Bruce were both dressed in the hip gothic style. Todd was wearing black jeans and his black leather jacket, and his dyed black hair was slicked back. Bruce had on a black tuxedo jacket and a narrow red tie. Todd swaggered down the hall next to Bruce, aware of all the attention they were getting.
A bunch of sophomore girls stopped and stared as they passed by.
"Lookin' good!" a girl yelled. Somebody else let out an appreciative whistle.
Todd didn't crack a smile. In fact, he pretended not to notice. But he loved the way girls were staring at him. This is the proof that I'm over Elizabeth, he thought. He never would have enjoyed all this attention if he still cared for her.
Bruce rubbed his hands together. "We've gotta start getting the word out about Jonathan's party on Friday," he said.
"I'm not sure if we should do that," Todd said worriedly. "Jonathan didn't actually say we could have a party at his place."
Bruce shrugged. "I don't think he's going to have a choice."
"Hold it a sec. I've gotta get a few books," Todd said as they approached his locker. Bruce slouched against the wall as Todd spun the combination lock.
"Hey, Todd, like the look," a low female voice said.
Todd turned to find Katrina standing by the locker. She was smiling up at him flirtatiously, her large brown eyes warm and inviting.
"Hey, you going to the party on Friday?" Bruce asked her.
"What party?" Katrina asked.
"Jonathan's having a party on Friday night," Todd explained, getting into the spirit of things. Bruce grinned at him, and Todd smiled back. He felt just a twinge of guilt over the fact that Jonathan had never actually agreed to the party.
"I'm going if you're going," Katrina said, batting her eyelashes at him.
"I'll be there," Todd said, giving her a cool smile. He was definitely enjoying being single.
"Here's a typo," Maria said, pointing to the page proofs laid out before them. It was Tuesday afternoon, and Maria and Elizabeth were at the Oracle office, proofreading the latest edition of the paper. Maria was lying flat on her stomach on the carpet, propped up on her elbows. Elizabeth sat cross-legged next to her.
Elizabeth circled the error with a thick red pencil. Penny Ayala had written an editorial about the new gothic look and had typed in ghastly instead of ghostly. " 'The gothic group has created a new ghastly look,' " Elizabeth read aloud, and laughed. "I think the typo is a lot more appropriate."
Maria joined in her laughter. "I agree one hundred percent. I can't believe what's happening to the junior class. The guys have become Jonathan look-alikes and the girls all resemble Morticia Addams.
