Scarlett slapped a hand across her mouth so she didnât scream and scare the baby, who was sleeping soundly. She stood there facing Dallas, listening to him tell her there is nothing on earth that is bad enough he canât hear about. âI, oh, dear Lord, look!â She pointed behind him.
Dallas turned. He looked back at her stricken face and took charge. âScarlett, get the baby and go back to the wagon. Iâll take care of this.â
She shook her head, afraid to move. âI, this is awful!â
âNow, Scarlett. Please do as I say.â
He picked up the basket with the baby and handed it to her. She gave him a grateful look and hurried to the wagon, setting the baby in the back. Scarlett pulled herself up when her whole body began to shiver.
Now she understood why the mother had never returned for her child.
She had every intention of returning to her baby.
Someone had stopped her from doing so.
Her body was floating in the creek, making its way downstream. It mustâve got caught on a rock or branch but the look of fright on the womanâs face said it all. Someone had been trying to harm her. Scarlett closed her eyes, trying to get the womanâs face out of her mind. It was the same woman she had met on the train.
Scarlett had to keep her secret now. The woman had left the baby in the barn because she was scared. She was trying to get away from someone. Had there been someone on the train following her? She mustâve known it and placed the baby in the barn to keep Eva safe. Dear Lord, she didnât even know the womanâs name!
Dallas had gathered the picnic basket and blanket and threw it haphazardly into the back of the wagon. He jumped up on the bench and began to head back to the farm. âIâm sorry, but we have to report this to the Sheriff. Iâm not sure how the woman died, but she has some bruising on her face and arms. She may have fell into the water and hit her head. She looks as if she was frightened of something.â
âIâm sure if she hit her head, she was scared.â Scarlett wasnât able to say much more. She was shaking so hard inside, she hoped Dallas wouldnât notice. He placed a hand on hers.
âIâm sorry you had to see her like that. Iâm not sure who she is, but the sheriff may know who she belongs to. Weâll know more once they do an investigation.â
The thought of being questioned made Scarlett ill. She feigned a headache when they got back to the house and hurried inside with Eva Marie. Dallas got her settled inside and left for town to get the law.
Scarlett watched him go off in the wagon. How was she going to explain things now? She had almost spilled the beans about the mother. She sure was in a quandary!
Even worse, it was apparent the mother had been killed.
