Chapter Twelve

Daisy's mouth hung open. "A rally?"

Betty nodded. "Yep."

"That's all you have to say? Yep?" Daisy scratched the side of her face. "You ladies are asking me to plan a rally for women's rights?"

The suggestion couldn't have come at a better time. Just that morning, she'd received a letter from Jordan declining her help with cleaning his office. It didn't come as a surprise, but she had to admit, it hurt. What had she done to make her so repulsive in his eyes? The mere thought of kissing her disgusted him so much it made him build a wall between them.

And that frustrated her. Daisy wanted to help him prepare for his guest, to meet the person Jordan deemed important enough to work himself into a frenzy. She also wanted to discover the reason behind the person's visit.

Now, she had no opportunity and felt on the outs with him. Daisy wasn't even sure how to make amends since he instigated the almost kiss, then he also put space between them.

The women's rights rally would be the distraction she needed. "What would it entail?"

Mary Lou raised her shoulder and let it fall. "We don't know. We thought you might be the perfect one to figure it out. Perhaps send a telegram to someone back East who's championing the cause? Or write them a letter?"

"That might work." Daisy sat at the table with them, tapping the pencil to her lips. "Wait." She blew out a breath. "I'll need it to be publicized."

"Yes, dear, we thought of that." Charlotte stirred sugar in her coffee. "We can make fliers and put them up around town. We may be able to send them to surrounding areas, as well."

"That's a good idea." Daisy worked her lower lip between her teeth. "If only we could use the newspaper."

Betty snapped her fingers. "That's a right good idea. We can talk to Jordan about it."

"Shouldn't I be the one to do that since I'm spearheading this?" Daisy eyed the women. Something nagged at her with their innocent looks.

"No, no. We'll take care of it." Charlotte waved off her suggestion. "He's so busy right now. There's no telling if he'll even cover it."

Daisy crossed her arms over the table. "Then he wouldn't be much of a newspaper man, now would he?"

"When we're through here, we'll head right over to the office and inform him of what's going on. You'll have to speak with the mayor, Daisy, to get his approval." Mary Lou spread butter on her toast.

"Do you think he'll allow it?" Daisy tossed a glance over her shoulder at the front door. No one else came in for breakfast, so she had time to talk with the ladies.

"I don't see why not. His wife feels strongly about women's rights." Mary Lou tapped her chin. "I wonder if Jordan's received any letters from her."

Betty snickered. "Knowing Mrs. Landry, I'd say he has."

Daisy giggled behind her hand. "That's true. Mrs. Landry is quite opinionated."

"And we love her for it." Charlotte's sweet smile filled her face.
