Once inside we realised the vast size of the camp and I’ll never forget my first sight of the inmates. Ostensibly they were living human beings, but to me the men, women and even children were just walking skeletons. When they realised that we had come to liberate them, some managed to find enough energy to swarm towards the barbed wire which contained them. In fact, in their joy, some impaled themselves on the barbs without any apparent registration of pain. Moving on, we then discovered a whole series of communal graves, consisting of trenches about a hundred yards long and 20 feet deep, which were being steadily filled with naked skeletal bodies. Lime was casually thrown over them, presumably to try to contain the danger of infection.
