I held my paradox close to my body, relishing in the duality of the strong muscles lying beneath her silky soft skin. My worst suspicions were confirmed. She had been taken by the cartel and forced to work for them. I knew they would be looking for her, as no one got away from the Sina Cartel, at least not without being in a body bag.

I held Antonia protectively in my arms, playing over a myriad of solutions and wondering which one I could live with. To offer the cartel money would be opening up a can of worms that would end in my death and hers.

We could pretend she died and post an obituary, host a fake funeral and then move her to a remote island where she could live in safety. I already knew that wouldn’t fly with my girl. Antonia was too restless to be hidden away.

Then I wondered if I had something that we could trade. Straight across the board with nothing left to negotiate. If you cut off its head, the problem with a snake is that two more grow in its place. What you needed to do is give them something and make them feel like they were the winner. That would take some thought. I needed a suitable bargaining chip, a bribe, or dirt on their operation… then it hit me. I was thunderstruck by the simplicity of it all.

Smiling at the plans I would put in motion, I rose silently from the bed and tiptoed down to my office. I needed to get a hold of my FBI contact and my lawyer. He would draw up the legal documentation to help me sell my case to the new head of the Sina Crime Family, Izzy Zamaya. His father had recently gone to prison, and he’d taken up the old man’s reins.

Pitching him with cleaning up the past for a better and brighter future was my angle. At least that was my working theory, but that may change once we had all the pieces we needed. I emailed Buck with my idea and also my lawyer, Harvey Wetzler.

I closed up the laptop and rifled a text off to Johnathan.

Still on for tonight?

The answer was almost immediate.

Should be.

Should be? What the hell did that mean?

?? I’m confused.

Simone has been naughty. Her lesson may keep her from sitting at the restaurant.

I laughed and thought our ladies were two peas in a pod.

Won’t that be part of the discipline, feeling your displeasure while she eats?

Johnathan sent back several laughy faces. Good point. See you at 7.

I was grinning with my imaginings of our dinner later that evening when I received an email alert. Opening it up. I found it was from Harvey.

This is impeccable timing, Alex. The Detroit branch is in shambles now, and I’m sure Izzy would love an excuse to clean house. I’ve connected with Buck and we’re putting together a plan. You’ll hear back when we have more.

I’d forgotten that Buck and Harvey knew each other.
