Chapter 5: Initiating Breach Protocol
So, let’s say the worst case scenario happens. You wake up one day preparing for work but your phone cannot stop ringing. Notifications keep dropping in like raindrops. You resist the temptation to check your phone until you get to the office. By now, you are probably certain something big is happening, and the anxiety is killing you. When you get to the office, it is chaotic. Everyone seems to be busy with something, people are running around, and you notice most of your superiors are holed up in meetings you were never aware of. Then it hits you - you’ve been hacked.
This is one of those scenarios everyone dreads, but at some point in the modern digital sphere, you must prepare for it. If you are lucky, you might never have to deal with it. The most important question: do you have a breach protocol?
There are different ways of dealing with a breach. The first few hours from the moment you notice you have been compromised are important and will determine how you make it out of this situation. Dealing with a hack is no different from dealing with a terrorist attack. Hackers are terrorists. Think about the 9/11 attacks. After the first attack, rescue operations were mobilized to manage the situation. However, a second blast followed that compounded the loss, given that members of the rescue team were soon added to the list of victims.
You need an elaborate breach protocol in the event of an attack. Without one, you might rush into the scenario, triggering an avalanche of events that would effectively see you complete the hacker’s mission. Some hackers invade your system hoping for total annihilation. They execute a hack so perfect, a chaotic response in the wake of unearthing their activities in your system could end up being just as catastrophic.
