CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

I finished up that piece a cake an’ went outside on the boardwalk just in time to see Homer Poteet walkin’ up the other side a the street. He noticed me an’ come over my way.

“How’s the patient?” Homer asked me.

“He et an’ went off to sleep. Cleaned his plate right smart.”

“Recoverin’ from gittin’ hurt can bring a feller’s appetite up some,” Homer said. “At this point, Marion could prob’ly eat a horned toad, tail first.”

“You look over that new mare, did ya?” I asked.

“She ain’t bad. Not mor’n a filly. Not much mor’n green broke neither, but she pays attention. We’ll git used to each other after a spell, I guess. Got a fair trot an’ a nice short lope. Good disposition an’ not nippy or nothin’ like that. Whoever broke her done it soft an’ damn shore knowed what he was doin’.”
